Resources for Parents and Teachers

Parents:

We hope your children have had a wonderful start to their school year! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Are you interested in learning more ways to incorporate literacy activities with your young children? You can attend the Great Start Parent Coalition’s class “Looking at Literacy for Children” on September 22, 2016 at 5:45-8:00 pm. Click here for a map. This is a free class open to any interested parent. Dinner and childcare for children ages 1 and up will be provided. For more information and to register for the class, call (616) 632-1007 or email gsparents@firststepskent.org.

Teachers:

Those of you working with ELs this year were told about the WIDA CAN DO Descriptors, which describe what students can do in terms of language usage at each level of English language proficiency. Using your students’ WIDA testing results from last year, you can look at the WIDA CAN DOs to figure out your ELs’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

For more information on how to use the CAN DOs, check out the following article – Can-Do Descriptors: A Free Tool for ESL Differentiation. Be sure to use the “Key Uses Editions” of the CAN DOs instead of the previous “Original Editions.”

If you have any questions about accommodating for your ELs, please contact your school’s EL teacher.
