Some key takeaways:
- Provide sufficient wait time (students are doing lots of processing!)
- Listen for correct understanding on comprehension questions, even if the response is not grammatically/linguistically correct
- Reduce question complexity (break into smaller chunks, etc.)
- Keep in mind dialect can affect pronunciation – students may know what the word is but be mispronouncing it
- You can always ask a student to define a word/use it in a sentence if you want to check this
