EL Field Trip

Parents:

Last Monday, October 28 the EL teachers took some of the 6th-12th grade EL and exited students on a field trip to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. We enjoyed a campus tour of the university, complimentary lunch at one of their dining halls, and a presentation about the college, application process, and importance of pursuing opportunities for future learning.

We hope the students left excited and energized to plan for their futures. We can’t wait to see all of the great things they are going to do in their communities!

Teachers:

If you’re looking for PD hours/SCHECHs this year as well as additional strategies for working with your EL students (especially lower-proficiency students), there are two opportunities in West Michigan this winter for you to become SIOP trained.
This two-day training will introduce K-12 content teachers and administrators to the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model, which is a research-based model that highlights 8 specific components and 30 features to make content comprehensible for English Learners.  Specific strategies that benefit ALL learners make this model relevant for all educators. Ongoing coaching will be offered to participants throughout the year.
One training is at Muskegon ISD on January 9-10 at 8:30am-3:30pm, lunch provided
The other training is at Allegan High School on January 16-17 at 8:30am-3:30pm, lunch provided

Please contact your building’s EL teacher soon if you are interested. We have some funding to cover limited seats for these trainings, your mileage, your sub, etc. You may not need to use your conference funds.
